FAQ & Engineering Guide
Common Machining Questions
What is the difference between CNC machined and forged valve balls?
CNC machined valve balls are precision-turned from bar stock or forgings, achieving tight tolerances (±0.01mm) and superior surface finish. Forged valve balls are first shaped by compressing heated metal, refining the grain structure for higher mechanical strength, then CNC finished to final dimensions.
When should I choose a cast valve ball over a forged one?
Cast valve balls are preferred for large diameters (typically above 24 inches) where forging is impractical or cost-prohibitive. Casting also enables complex internal geometries. For high-pressure or critical service, forged balls are recommended due to their superior structural integrity.
What surface treatments are available for welded valve balls?
Welded valve balls can be hardfaced with Stellite, tungsten carbide or chrome oxide overlays for abrasion resistance. Cladding with Inconel or Hastelloy provides corrosion resistance for sour gas and chemical service. The base material can be carbon steel, stainless steel or duplex stainless.
Which manufacturing process is most cost-effective?
Cost-effectiveness depends on quantity and size. For small to medium valve balls in high volume, casting offers the lowest unit cost. For medium quantities requiring high precision, CNC machining from forgings is optimal. For severe service, welded hardfacing adds cost but extends service life significantly.
What is the typical lead time for each machining method?
CNC machined valve balls typically have the shortest lead time (2-4 weeks) as material is readily available. Forged balls require die preparation (4-8 weeks). Cast balls need pattern making (6-10 weeks for first article). Welded balls depend on overlay specification (4-6 weeks). Rush production is available for all processes.
